Why do we need AED's in our Facilities or Homes?
Each year, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) kills approximately 250,000 people in the U.S. Even a seemingly healthy person can suffer cardiac arrest without warning, and death can occur instantly or shortly after the onset of symptoms. When sudden cardiac arrest strikes, the electrical system of the heart short-circuits, most often causing an abnormal rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the only definitive treatment for SCA is CPR and the integrated application of an electrical shock from a defibrillator.
Why can't we just call 911
There is a good chance emergency medical services (EMS) may not be able to respond fast enough to someone in cardiac arrest, especially in crowded urban areas, high-rise buildings, large facilities, or rural areas. The chance of a SCA victim's survival decreases by 10% with every minute that passes. In order to be effective, defibrillation must be administered within the first few minutes of SCA.
Regardless of whether you're a private individual or a public business, you need to have an AED in your home or business.
